Will a brace affect me playing my saxophone at University?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

Hello, I’m at Birmingham University and am currently in my third year, studying BMus Music. obviously the year only started at the end of September and so the course hasn’t ran any great length of time. Now my dentist/orthodontist has told me I am going to need braces which has terrified me. of this I have two questions, firstly, do you think/have you heard cases whereby braces could affect a person playing an instrument such as a saxophone? and secondly, if the answer is yes do you think it will make a difference if I got lingual braces instead of traditional ones? I thought it might do as I’ll be able to move the embouchure more freely? please could you help me I don’t want this to affect UNI.

My front teeth have crossed, can you tell me about six month smiles please?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hello Dr Darsh Patel.my teeths at the front of my mouth are quite badly crossed and have been like this for a few years now since I was 17 ( I a now 22). its clear that I should have had braces at that point as they would have been never been like this now and would have been fixed, over and done with. at the end of next July I will be moving out to start my new job up north in Manchester and Want my teeth to be straight before I go back, I see the six month smiles and wonder if they will be OK for me, What kind of criteria do I have to meet in order to get these braces and what’s the system involved when compared with that of the old/normal brace/ train tracks. does it hurt more because if its a brace it’ll have to pull tighter wont it? please help as I need to get a move on, thank you for your time very much.

Is it possible that my Incognito braces have fixed my teeth earlier than anticipated?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

HI, I have got incognito lingual braces and have had them for about seven months now. I had them because they were more discreet than normal linguals, for my tongue and helped as a result with speech issues, I got used to them very quickly. however I apparently had very little choice as I have a list of allergies as long as your arm and am susceptible to many different types of them (dust being among the more ludicrous ones! grass and fungus (damp) being the worst), and again they have been terrific and i can report a clean bill of health for the duration of my treatment thus far. however, when I had my initial appointment and fittings I was tol the treatment would take around 12-13 months for me personally as im told this can vary from patient to patient. as I saidd its now been about 7months and for all I can seen my teeth are but perfect? I go for another adjustment in just over a week and see no reason why that one shouldn’t see me finish my treatment ‘early’/ahead of schedule if you like. would that be possible do you think? by which is it possible the dentist could be wrong (by double the duration time as opposed to one or two weeks) and have you ever seen/heard cases where this has happened, as I don’t know what to do there’s no point wearing them if I dont have to? thanks a lot Dr Hutchcinson

I had a relapse after traditional braces and am looking to rectify it, what’s the deal with lingual braces?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hello I have looked online at potential/common side effects of lingual braces and wondered if there was any truth in them. does a lingual brace (behind the the teeth?) actually affect your speech? and apparently it can give your tongue issues with room? if it does how would you over come this? also how does the lingual brace affect your food? will it be any different to a traditional brace? i had one of them (fixed brace on the front of my teeth) years ago but have since relapsed back to almost to where I was at the beginning of my treatment but I don’t want to have to have them again as they were absolute hell I looked silly and hated them, and am looking to alternative treatments. cheers

Will potential gum disease affect my chances of getting a lingual brace?

October 21st, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr Patel, I Have really badly crossed lower teeth and my upper teeth have started overlapping slightly, I don’t want traditional braces to fix these and have looked at lingual braces, the issue is I think I may have mild gum disease? my gum is slightly red and sensitive to knocks (catching with the a toothbrush usually results in bleeding) but only at the front of my mouth? would this stop me getting lingual braces, i’m thinking about issues with brushing etc.? and if so how do I combat it so I can then move on to actually having them straightened? any feedback would be great, thanks.

How do social six braces work and how much do they cost?

October 20th, 2011
Q.

Dr, could you tell me how the social six work? I know they only fix the front five/six teeth but how is this possible without having all the back teeth move as-well? would you have to have a few teeth removed (/or be more qualified if you had a few missing) these are the teeth on me that need fixing and I thought it would be better option as there are less of them and additionally they are located behind the teeth. furthermore how much do social six treatments cost as I may have to save up and wait, but I wanted the treatment as soon as possible so further movement doesn’t take place whilst I save up.

Do I need retainers after Invisalign treatment?

October 17th, 2011
Q.

I have just finished a course of invisalign aligners and am chuffed to bits, the removable nature of them ment that i could go on the occasional night out/meal with out them as well as take them out to wash my teeth. brilliant stuff. however, I literally finished last week and the dentist just sort of went, OK thats fine, brill. he took photos for his case study as he’s only just started offering the treatment. as a result however im left a bit worried. I just had this thought, if my teeth grew to be in that position albeit the wrong one then whats to stop me having a relapse hes said nothing (after doing a bit of research myself) of a retainer or anything? do i need one after invisalign all the examples i found were after traditional braces. The ting is if I do need one I dontparticularly want to be constantly taking this thing in/out it’ll be just like continuing my treatment for the rest of my life! are there alternatives to retainers? and also if there are not how long do i have to wear the retainer is it ‘for life?’

Can I get anything other than traditional braces on the NHS?

October 17th, 2011
Q.

hi I am 15 and am 16 in three months. I have crooked teeth that I want sorting out. I know that the NHS stops providing for orthodontic/brace treatment after the age of 16 unless thats changed as well? I wanted to know, do they only provide for train tracks or can I get some/all of any of the lingual type braces as I dont want to start college with train tracks? If they Dont is the a Chance that I can get aid in terms of paying for the procedure of having lingual braces? my mum is a single mum and gets child support if that makes a difference? If not I work and will try to save up, which brings me to my next point, is the a consistently cheaper option out of the lingual systems, I figured Inmans and Damons are the more expensive, and how much do they average at? cheers :D

How much time does it take for Six Month Smiles and the Inman Aligner to straighten teeth?

October 17th, 2011
Q.

I have got very crooked teeth at the front of my mouth and have talked to many people on forums and the like, but none of them are experts. I have been looking to fix these but using an alternative method to traditional braces. I have looked at the inman aligner and have been told on many occasion that it is one of the fastest treatments to sort out crooked teeth, would you say that this is the case? ad also could you tell me about them? I wanted to know, if they are fast how fast is fast because you can get this six month smile treatment which is obviously really quick. If the inmans are quick how do they work and how much do they cost and how do they work? I know this seems like a lot but thankyou in advance, I just want to gather as much information/feedback as I can before making a decision , thankyou.
