I don’t want a bonded retainer after my braces treatment is complete. What can I do?

Q.
I have been advised that I have to receive a bonded retainer after my brace treatment is completed. I don’t want a bonded retainer at all! Why would I require one of these things? I know I have to have a retainer but I don’t want a permanent one stuck to my teeth! Wouldn’t it just get in the way? I don’t want to struggle with eating/talking for the rest of my life with this thing in my mouth! What should I say to my dentist? He is adamant that I have have the bonded retainer. Thanks

There are no hard and fast rules for bonded retainers! And it should never be forced on someone. If treatment has been done well, then essix (plastic) retainers worn well are JUST as good as bonded retainers. Naturally this requires you to WEAR them otherwise the teeth will move. If you do want one then makse sure they are fitted neatly so they are easy to keep clean and comfortable.
Good luck
