Should my daughter receive traditional braces through the NHS or Damon braces privately?

Q.
Hi there, I have been to the ortodontist today with my 8 year old daughter. She has a class 3 crossbite. She will need treatment and were given the choice of payying privately now for damon braces or waiting until she is older and having NHS treatment with traditional braces. I don’t know which is going to give her the best result and the orthodontist can’t advise me. If damon braces are generally a shorter treatment time therefore less costs labour wise, less painful and with fewer extractions how come they aren’t available on the NHS? Which treatment path would you recommend? Thanks
A.
Hi,

Of course I cannot speak on behalf of the NHS, but having used Damon braces myself, I am aware of the fact that, whilst they may reduce labour costs, the brackets and materials themselves are costly, and I would imagine that this is the main reason that they are not freely available on the NHS.
As for your daughter, whilst it is difficult to comment with any certainty with seeing her myself, if there is any risk of damge to the adult teeth at the front as a result of the crossbite or the chance that treatment now might reduce the complexity of her treatment at a later date, it may be worth undertaking now. If not, it may be better to wait and see how she grows and the teeth change.

I am sorry I cannot be of more help,

Kind regards,
