Would I Develop A Lisp If I Were To Get A Lingual Brace?

Q.
Please advise as to the following:
1. I understand that lingual braces can cause a speech defect eg, lisp and that this improves with time and practice. However does it disappear completely during the treatment and on average how long does this take?

2. After removal of the lingual brace does speech return to normal or is lisping defect permanent? Is there any chance that after removal speech will not return back to normal?

3. Is this treatment available outside of the UK?

Please advise me on the above questions.

A.
Hello and thank you for writing to me. Firstly I would suggest that going abroad for treatment is unwise. If any complications arise then it would mean travelling abroad to sort the treatment out at a potentially greater cost. There is also little accountability for dentists aboard compared to the UK. In most cases, speech defects tend to disappear when you get used to the fit of the braces. There are also exercises you can practice to prevent this.
