My lingual braces have ruined my ability to speak. What can I do?

Q.
My speech is completely ruined! i got lingual braces about 4 months ago now, thinking it would help my smile and sort my teeth out. they’re sort of working i think but i can’t speak, my ortho keeps saying ‘oh it’ll take a few weeks to get used to them’ but 4 months? and i still can’t speak? this isn’t normal, right? please help me, is there anything i can do? i can see my friends smirking when i speak, it’s really getting me down, just seriously considering just removing them!!

I’m afraid there’s no real answer to this one. Everyone reacts differently to braces, as with most things in life. The majority of people find that after the first 4 weeks their speech normalises but some struggle with it throughout treatment.
I would still encourage you to persevere if possible as I’m sure that the end result of beautiful straight teeth will be worth it.
You could also have a word with your friends and ask them for a bit more support.
If not, as you say, you may have to discuss early removal of the brace with your orthodontist, but this would be a shame.
Good luck!
