I’m not sure whether to get lingual braces. Are they good and who should carry out the procedure?

Q.
Hi,
I am a 31 year old adult considering getting braces. I have had three consultations with three different specialists. The first orthodontists recommended that I have fixed upper and lower appliances (train tracks) for 12-18mths. It was only after this consultation that I learnt about lingual braces. I then had two more consultations with two different specialists (both of which were not orthodontists but offered orthodontic treatment). Both told me that I
would be a suitable candidate for lingual braces. The first quoted me 9-10 mths treatment time, the second 6-7mths treatment time.

I would prefer to go for the lingual brace system, however, my two concerns are: firstly, can lingual braces be as effective as the traditional ‘train tracks’ when the treatment time is much less? Secondly, the specialists that recommended lingual braces were not orthodontists but dentists who specialised in some orthodontic treatment. If I am considering lingual braces should I make sure the treatment is carried out by an orthodontist.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks.

Hi,
Lingual braces certainly can be as effective as traditional “traintracks”. I am not sure about the treatment time…this is very dependant on the degree of crookedness and whether you are having all of the teeth straightened or just the front few.
As to the practitioner, some dentists have a quite a lot of experience with braces but lingual orthodontics is quite a specialist field and there even some orthodontists that don’t do it, so personally I would recommend an orthodontic specialist is the best place to head for this sort of treatment.
I hope this proves useful.
