I have been told that lingual braces aren’t actually that good. Is this true?

Q.
I am to have my lingual braces put into place next monday. I am really beginning to regret this decision after a discussion with my general dentist (i’m getting the braces from a separate ortho guy) as he said they aren’t really all that good. I only really wanted them because they are supposed to be hidden behind the teeth and I don’t want to be showing off braces while I’m in my work on a daily basis. Is this how it is? Please help me out.
A.
Lingual braces are very good for particular cases and patients but it is very individual. Some find that they struggle with them as they lie close to the tongue and it may affect the speech initially. Other patients have absolutely no problems whatsoever. I have seen both types myself and it is very variable.
I would say to discuss, in further depths, with the orthodontist about this. You must remember, the orthodontist is the expert on tooth movement, and whilst I am sure your dentist means well, he may not fully understand the system,
