Would getting a retainer make up for the relapse of my teeth after wearing braces?

Q.
Hello, I had fixed braces as a teen (the horrible train-track type) and failed to use my retainer properly in later years. I feel my teeth have relapsed but not severely, they still look quite straight there’s just 2 on the front at the top that are protruding slightly. Do you think I’d be suitable for 6 month smiles? OR could I just get a new retainer from my ortho in the mean time (till I can afford new braces)? what do you think?
A.
I’m afraid that only an orthodontic assessment can answer your query in full. Whilst a new retainer will prevent further movement it cannot reposition the teeth, except in the very mildest of orthodontic cases. The type of brace, if the retainer is not adequate, really depends on the movements that are required to reposition them in full.
