Will Lingual Braces Chip My Dental Crown?

Q.
Hello Dr Hutchinson. I have a porcelain crown on one of my top teeth as the result of an accident I had 3 months ago. My teeth have always been a bit crooked, especially my bottom ones, and I’m looking into lingual braces as a solution. I’m worried that the brace will damage my crown, will this happen? I haven’t had it more than 2 months. Will the braces chip away at the back of my crown? If this is the case can you suggest a good alternative for me? Thanks.

Hi, thank you for your question. I can’t see there being any problems with this really. I would suggest, however, that you go and see your orthodontist so they can check that your crowns are strong enough, and that there are no weaknesses. If you haven’t already, try and find an orthodontist who has experience working with patients who have crowns, so that they can help to dispel any of your concerns. Good luck.
