Are my crooked teeth ‘hiding’ bacteria?

June 29th, 2012
Q.

hello Mr Patel. i have been suffering from problems with my teeth for a while now and i think it could give me gum disease. I have been looking online at things that say that crooked teeth can hide bacteria that you cant get at when brushing. if this is the case then I am in a rush. I am twenty and i have had crooked teeth for nearly eighteen years. If this is causing some damage that I can’t see and I need to fix it. which brace gets teeth straight whist still being able to brush/ maintain health? what would you recommend ? thank you very much for your time.

I am worried gum disease will return if I get lingual braces. Can you advise?

Hi Darsh.. I feel my teeth are in such a state I migh not be able to have braces, I had gum disease for a long while that eventually subsided about a year ago now, Ive been waiting trying to let my gums recover before making a move on any orthadontic treatment. I do not want train tracks that’s one thing I can do without. I would ideally like a set of lingual braces, I think I asked Dr Hutchinson about what braces were best on here not to long ago and he was adamant that either traditional braces (tooth coloured) or linguals were the way to go, but do you think gum disease will have left any damage that could affect me getting braces? like I said I definatley haven’t got it anymore just want to know about any relation that might exist between them and gum disease? cheers

I am having problems properly cleaning my lingual braces. Could you advise?

Dr Patel could you please help me with my braces. I really dont want to get gum disease whilst my braces are on, I have lingual braces and cleaning them is a nighmare it takes about an evening to do. I do clean them all the time but its hard and sometimes I feel myself that i do not do them properly even though i try to. I looked at causes of gum disease the other day and apparently its largely due to plaque build up that doesnt get removed. I would assume that lingual braces are perfect hosts for this as they are behind the teeth and bacteria can easily hide? I sometimes think that a bit of knowledge can be dangerous and now I am really worried and have noticed that my gums are not as pink ad they used to be. I have got about seven months left with them on according to my dentist and would not want to have them removed whilst it goes only for my teeth to revert back to where they were. please could you advise on what I could potentially do in this situation I am really bothered by the whole thing. kindly appreciate you taking the time to read this. thank you

Will potential gum disease affect my chances of getting a lingual brace?

Hi Dr Patel, I Have really badly crossed lower teeth and my upper teeth have started overlapping slightly, I don’t want traditional braces to fix these and have looked at lingual braces, the issue is I think I may have mild gum disease? my gum is slightly red and sensitive to knocks (catching with the a toothbrush usually results in bleeding) but only at the front of my mouth? would this stop me getting lingual braces, i’m thinking about issues with brushing etc.? and if so how do I combat it so I can then move on to actually having them straightened? any feedback would be great, thanks.
