My Teeth Are Very Sensitive Now I’m Wearing Braces. Is This Normal?

Q.
Hi Dr Qureshi, I’m really hoping you can help me. I got braces just less than 4 months ago and now my teeth have gotten very sensitive. It’s mostly to cold things, like cold drinks and food like yoghurts that have been in the fridge. Sometimes if it’s cold outside the air actually affects my teeth and they feel sensitive even then! Is this normal, and what can be done about it? It really is a nuisance, and it’s very uncomfortable at times.

Hello, thank you for your question and I’m sorry to hear of your discomfort. Sensitivity is quite a common occurrence when the teeth are moving position, so don’t worry. My advice would be to try and avoid hard foods, as crunching can often increase the sensitivity. If it gets very painful you can take Ibruprophen to ease the pain. It shouldn’t last for an extensive period of time, but if it does then I would definitely suggest visiting your orthodontist.
