I’m 16 and Still At School. Why Do I Need to Pay For Treatment?

Q.
Hi, I’m 16 years old and still at school. My teeth are very wonky on both the top and the bottom. I visited an orthodontist and he said I’d have to pay nearly £2000. He said this is because it’s classed as a cosmetic thing, but my normal dentist has been telling me I need braces since I was 7. I’ve got a wisdom tooth coming through at the bottom and it’s pushing my teeth and making them even more crooked. Can I have any other kind of treatment that isn’t so expensive?
A.
Hello, thank you for sending your question to me. Braces are the only way of aligning your teeth, but it’s possible that you may not have qualified for treatment under the NHS, which would explain why your orthodontist suggested the cost. If I were you, I’d get a second opinion at another orthodontic practice, just to see if you actually do qualify for NHS treatment. Good luck!
