I Broke My Lingual Braces Through Tooth-Grinding. What Should I Do?

Q.
Hi Saba. I’m currently wearing lingual braces but unfortunately I grind my teeth in the night and have broken the brackets after just 4 weeks! Obviously I haven’t broken them on purpose and I’m scared of what my orthodontist will say. I haven’t told anyone that I grind my teeth because I didn’t want to be told I couldn’t have braces but now it’s obviously a problem because I’ve broken them. What should I do and will I have to pay for new ones?

Hello there, thank you for your question. Try not to worry – these things happen sometimes. You really do need to see your orthodontist as soon as possible though, explain thoroughly to him/her what’s happened and they’ll be able to sort it for you. With regards to cost I can’t be sure whether there will be a replacement cost or not, that’s something you’ll have to discuss with your orthodontist. There are actually ways to prevent you from biting into the brackets so it’s definitely worth speaking to the orthodontist as soon as possible. Good luck!
