I am worried gum disease will return if I get lingual braces. Can you advise?

Q.
Hi Darsh.. I feel my teeth are in such a state I migh not be able to have braces, I had gum disease for a long while that eventually subsided about a year ago now, Ive been waiting trying to let my gums recover before making a move on any orthadontic treatment. I do not want train tracks that’s one thing I can do without. I would ideally like a set of lingual braces, I think I asked Dr Hutchinson about what braces were best on here not to long ago and he was adamant that either traditional braces (tooth coloured) or linguals were the way to go, but do you think gum disease will have left any damage that could affect me getting braces? like I said I definatley haven’t got it anymore just want to know about any relation that might exist between them and gum disease? cheers

Hi, thanks for the great question!

The most important thing is that there is no active disease present when the braces go on! This needs to be assessed by a dentist and you need to have the all clear….”Gum disease has stabilised” as quite often you think you have not got it and you have as it is hidden underneath the gums.

Once this has been checked then its your choice which brace you prefer, outside, inside, removable! As long as it is powerful enough to get the job done.

Therefore, get the all clear from you dentist and then get a consultation with a Specialist Orthodontist to find out how to achieve that great smile you are after!

Good Luck!
