How do lingual braces move teeth, I understand how conventional one’s do?

Q.
Hello. Dr Saba Qureshi could you please help me on braces. I have a few queries in about them but I shall minimize this as best possible. I want to have braces on the back of my teeth so nobody sees them but I don’t understand how they work. how do they pull teeth? the convex arc around the outside of teeth with normal braces surely means that it’s easier to pull teeth (due to this natural arc shape) but on the inside, how do they pull tight without pulling your teeth inwards (towards the tongue)? I am a little perplexed and it’s stopping me getting the brace. thank you for your efforts Dr I know I am awkward!!
A.
Hi there,
You are not being awkward and I hope I don’t confuse you, but I will try and expalin a little about what happens.
As you say, on the outside we use a wire that has a memory that is compressed into displaced teeth and the force of the wire returning to it’s original shape pulls the teeth into a nice arc.
On the inside it is a similar but opposite effect. the wire is compressed to sit inside the mouth and the activity in this, the brackets and the difference in where the force is applied due to it being behind the teeth, aim to move the teeth onto a better arc. The wires inside are usually specifically shaped for your particular requirements unlike the generic wires used on the outside.
I can assure you that unless your teeth need to be pulled back, they won’t be even if a lingual.
I hope this has been of some use,
