Hi There Dr Patel, I’m Really Happy With My Braces, But I Struggle To Clean The Very Back Teeth. Any Tips?

Q.
Hi there Dr Patel!!! I’m really happy with my braces, but I really struggle with cleaning my very, very back teeth. Especially now that my braces have been tightened a little bit. It’s pretty much impossible to even attempt to get at them. So essentially I wanted to know whether or not you know of any neat tricks to get the back top and bottom teeth cleaned really well. I’ve tried to be inventive so far but a pipe cleaner doesn’t work too well! Hope to hear back from you. Thank you.

Hi, thank you for your enquiry. It is quite a common problem for many patients as you can imagine. The first thing I would say is to try and get your hands on a proxy/Christmas tree brush as these are ideal for cleaning stubborn bits of food. If this doesn’t work it may be worth trying a water flosser. I would also suggest that you try and avoid certain foods which can be easily trapped in your braces as gingivitis can occur after just 48 hours. Thanks, I hope this all helps.
